Day of Queer Joy* - May 17, 2024

Written by
IDAHOBIT Action on Name Change Fee?
SCROLL down to bottom of page for details!
-----------------------------------------
Part 1* – Flag Raising: 12 Noon

Kick off the day by joining us for a flag-raising ceremony to commemorate the May 17th International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). We will proudly raise the progress pride flag and hear from local queer leaders at 12 PM in the Province House courtyard. Let’s centre Queer Joy, to fight Queer hate!

The site is wheelchair-accessible, and all are welcome to attend.
Part 2* – Living Library: 3 – 5 PM
Weather permitting, it will take place outside on the rear plaza at the Halifax Central Library. If not, it will be held in the library’s Paul O'Regan Hall. There will be a variety of tables set up with queer folks and organizations sharing their experiences in activism, navigating health structures, queer culture, current societal situations, and more.
This event is for all ages, but some speaker's specializations are defiantly more heavy than others. We hope that by hearing from these wonderful people, you will see that you are not alone, and that we not only stand together but also grow together.
Part 3* – Spring Fling: 7 – 10 PM
This exciting event will take place on at the Halifax Central Library in the Paul O'Regan Hall. The first hour will feature a free show with drag performances, poetry readings, live music, and more, hosted by the fabulous Anna Monapia. After that, we'll transition to a dry dance with music by the talented DJ AmbieNsound.
Complimentary snacks, sweets, mocktails, sodas, and alcohol-free beers (courtesy of Garrison Brewing Company) will be available throughout the evening. Join us for this all-ages celebration of queer joy and pride!

IDAHOBIT Action on Name Change Fee?
Help end the name change fee for Trans, Two-Spirit, Non-Binary and Intersex people in Nova Scotia.
It costs approximately $275 dollars to legally change your name in Nova Scotia (a name change fee of $167.50 and a fingerprint fee of $78.20). The high price creates a barrier to this essential service and aspect of gender affirming care for many Trans, Two-Spirit, Non-Binary and Intersex people in the province.
On the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) and throughout the month of May, ACNS is partnering with the Youth Project in their efforts calling on the Department of Service Nova Scotia to waive the name change fee and fingerprinting fee for Trans, Two-Spirit, Non-Binary and Intersex people to make this essential service and aspect of gender affirming care accessible.
We need your help! You can help by:
1 - Signing the LETTER as an individual or organization
2 - Signing the pen-and-paper PETITION at the following locations:
- Venus Envy (1727 Barrington Street) during open hours
- AIDS Coalition of Nova Scotia (5516 Spring Garden Road, Suite 200) during open hours
- At the “Day of Queer Joy” on May 17th at the Halifax Public Central Library from 3PM-5PM & 7PM-10PM
Please note, the only way to sign the petition is in-person due to requirements made by the Nova Scotia Legislature.
If you have any questions about the letter or petition, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Red Scarf Project-Halifax

Written by
We won’t spin your yarn – The Red Scarf Project is back!
Designed to raise awareness of World AIDS Day and the current realities of HIV in Nova Scotia, we will once again be hanging red scarves on the fences around the Public Gardens to be taken by any who need them.
Given the success of our first three years, we’re bringing the project back, and we’re hoping to make it even bigger. We had over 150 scarves bearing educational messages on display in 2021, over 220 scarves in 2022, and over 300 scarves last year! Just like last year, we will tie hand-made scarves to mark December 1st - World AIDS Day. Scarves need to be: 1) red :-) and 2) at least 5 ft long by 6 inches wide.
We are recruiting knitters now for this year's iteration. If you are interested in knitting for the event, are hoping to drop off finished scarves, or want to know more about the Red Scarf Project, contact our Red Scarf Project lead Jamie at This email address is being protected from spambots.
